Community Access & Participation

Life doesn't stop at the front door. Support to participate in everyday community life, on the participant's terms, at their pace, in ways that reflect who they actually are.

Outdoor community space

What this means

More than taking someone somewhere.

Meaningful community participation is not simply about transport and supervision. It is about enabling genuine participation in a way that reflects the participant's interests, preferences, communication, sensory needs, capacity and individual goals.

Banksia Care takes the time to understand the person before planning the activity. Not every outing suits every participant, and that is not a failure. It is good planning.

Activities may include

  • Shopping, cafes and everyday errands
  • Parks, libraries and local community spaces
  • Medical and other appointments
  • Sport, recreation and hobbies
  • Community events and social activities
  • Interest-based experiences and outings
  • Social connection and building relationships

Sensory-aware planning

Safety includes feeling safe.

Activities and outings are planned with the participant's sensory profile in mind. Noise, crowding, lighting, transitions, waiting, unexpected changes and social demands can all affect how an outing feels for a participant.

Banksia Care uses participant profiles and questionnaires to reduce avoidable overwhelm and overstimulation. The goal is to enable participation, not to push through discomfort.

Individual participant profile

We get to know the person before we plan the activity.

Each participant has a comprehensive profile that considers communication, strengths, interests, preferences, sensory needs, regulation strategies, support requirements and relevant health information. Not every activity is suitable for every person, and that is okay. Banksia Care would rather adapt the experience than expect the participant to adapt themselves.
